“VA FAAN! WHAT IS HAPPENING OVER THERE?” The phone is ringing on the morning of September 11, 2001, and to my surprise it’s my older brother calling all the way from Stockholm. I begin to exchange pleasantries, but my brother interrupts loudly. “Suzanne, listen to me. You must turn on your TV, NOW.” His voice is getting increasingly tense and he sounds alarmed. My TV comes on just as video footage is showing the second Twin Tower collapsing. And in that moment, unbeknownst to me, my life changes forever. Little did I know that the attack on our country on that terrible day would be the catalyst through which I would find a way to give back to my community through search and rescue while at the same time realizing my life-long dream of having a dog.
