Session Theme  and Powerful Questions

From Wellness to Well-being!

Are you up to speed on trends in the area of employee health and wellness? In this session you will hear from Nicole Grogan, Senior VP of Human Resources with Intellectual Ventures. She will be sharing the journey her company has embarked on to shift from wellness strategies to a more holistic approach that is not only geared towards increasing productivity and the bottom line but the overall well-being and health of the biggest asset of the company: employees as well as their families. In talking to Nicole, she commented that her company is focused on physical, emotional and financial dimensions. We will also explore other approaches including companies that are focused on the five pillars below:

  1. Physical
  2. Emotional
  3. Social
  4. Financial
  5. Career

Throughout the session you will be able to engage and share your own experiences and discuss trends with Nicole and Ian Flatt who will be guest visiting from Mercer. As always we will be focusing our discussion around powerful questions. Here is a sampling of a few (which ones resonate with you and what would you like to add?):

  1. What is the difference between wellness and wellbeing strategies and why does it matter? Is this just a new fad or the “same old” repackaged? What has/has not worked with traditional wellness strategies?
  2. How do you make the business case for a shift to wellbeing strategies?
  3. What are good/bad examples of companies that are doing well-being well/poorly?
  4. What will be possible if you develop an effective well-being strategy for your organization? What is the cost of doing nothing?
  5. Who owns wellbeing? How do you sell it to your CEO and senior leaders? Employees? What is the role of HR?
  6. Is the timing right for your company? Is your company a good or bad candidate (for example cultural fit)? Why?
  7. How do you get employees more engaged in their own health and well-being in a more holistic way? How do you sustain engagement over time?
  8. What are inherent risks in making this shift? How do you mitigate or control?
  9. What are some creative strategies you can use to move in this direction without breaking the bank?
  10. Should we be using the carrot or the stick, or both?
  11. How do you integrate well-being into your medical plans? What are the hot buttons in healthcare reform and health law? What does it mean for incentives and the overall climate for organizational wellbeing strategies?
  12. How do you manage well-being effectively across cultures? Global integration vs localization?
  13. How much is too much? When does it become counter productive?

Come prepared to engage!
